Laser tattoo removal is an effective and safe method

Laser treatment is currently the most effective and widely used method of removing tattoos without surgery. At Elir Clinic, we use advanced laser technology that breaks up the ink particles under the skin, causing the body's own immune system to gradually remove the broken down pigment. The treatment method is specifically designed to minimize skin damage and support the skin's natural healing process, resulting in a clean and healthy skin.

Laser tattoo removal is suitable for many different skin types and works on most tattoo colors, although removing bright colors may require multiple treatments. The depth of the tattoo, the degree of color saturation and the quality of the ink also significantly affect how many treatments are required to achieve the desired result. At Elir Clinic, we assess each case individually to ensure that the laser treatment is carried out effectively and safely in a way that is right for your skin. We will consult you with all the information you need regarding the removal or lightening of your own tattoo.

Are you considering tattoo removal? Elir Clinic offers expert tattoo removal in Helsinki with over 20 years of experience. We use modern laser technology to safely and effectively remove tattoos of all colors and sizes. Our laser treatments are ideal for anyone who values both aesthetic results and treatment safety.

What is the process of tattoo removal?

Before treatment:

  • We recommend using a numbing cream, which you can find at a pharmacy, for example. Apply a thick layer to the tattoo about 2 hours before your appointment and cover the area with plastic wrap and tape.

  • Remove makeup from the treatment area. If you have used self-tanning cream on the treatment area, we recommend waiting 2 weeks before treatment. The same applies to chemical peels, microneedling treatments or injections on the treatment area.

  • If the area to be treated is very hairy, we recommend shaving it the night before.

  • If you feel nervous when coming to treatment and want to bring a friend with you, that is possible.

During treatment:

  • We start by taking a photo of the tattoo, which we monitor during the series of treatments. If this is your first time, we will walk you through the entire process and answer any questions you may have. If you have had treatment before, we will discuss any reactions to previous treatments. The amount, depth, and color quality, as well as the location of the tattoo and the sensitivity of the skin, are assessed by the laser therapist, who will determine the intensities to be used in the treatment.

  • In a trial treatment, we treat a small area of the tattoo to see how the ink and your skin react.

After treatment:

  • As the treated area may feel warm after the treatment, we will apply a soothing, cooling cream to the area. You can also cool the area yourself afterwards if you feel like it. As your skin surface is intact, you can continue with your day without any worries after the treatment. However, we recommend that you monitor your condition as some people may feel a little tired and the treated area may feel hot and sore during the day.

  • We also recommend using an aftercare cream for about 2 weeks.

  • You will receive aftercare instructions and can contact us if you have any questions.

Tattoo removal is an individual process

Every tattoo is different, and so is its removal. The color, size, location on the body, age, and ink used all play a role in determining which removal process is best for you. During your first visit, our experts will carefully assess all of these factors: the size, color, location, and depth of your tattoo. Based on this, we will create a personalized treatment plan that ensures a safe, effective, and as hassle-free a treatment process as possible.

The treatments are always performed by a trained and experienced professional using modern equipment, and you will receive comprehensive and clear instructions both before and after the treatment. These will help your skin recover in the best possible way, minimizing risks and maximizing the quality of the end result. After the treatment, we will also monitor your skin's healing so that you can feel safe throughout the treatment path.

You can book a personal consultation where we go through a detailed treatment plan. In the consultation, our expert evaluates your tattoo individually and prepares a treatment plan that is just right for you, which takes into account your skin type, the characteristics of the tattoo, and the desired end result, be it lightening or complete removal. This guarantees a safe and effective treatment process from start to finish, and helps you to understand your entire treatment path in advance clearly and with confidence.

If you feel that you are ready for tattoo removal, and you feel that you know enough about the tattoo removal process, if you wish, you can start the first treatment right away without a consultation, if the tattoo is smaller than 10x10 cm.

Tattoo removal price

The price of tattoo removal is determined by the size of the tattoo or the number of them. At Elir Clinic, prices start at 210 euros for small tattoos (less than 3x3 cm). Removal of a large or several small tattoos costs 260€. The exact price for the treatment is given at the time of the consultation or the start of the treatment, where the treatment plan is reviewed and the number of necessary treatment sessions is estimated.

Frequently asked questions about tattoo removal

How long does it take to remove a tattoo?

Tattoo removal requires an average of about 8 treatment sessions, depending on e.g. the color and depth of the tattoo, the skin type and the quality of the tattoo. Tattooed eyebrows usually require 2-5 treatments, while a cover-up may only require 2-3 treatments. In terms of time, the process can take months to years.

Between treatments, we take a break of 6–10 weeks, during which the body's white blood cells break down broken ink in the tattooed area together with the lymph nodes. After about 8 weeks, about 70% of the exploding ink has left the body. After this, it will still take months for the rest of the broken ink to be removed. With longer treatment intervals, we reduce the risk that the next treatment will target ink that has already broken, instead of targeting ink that is deeper in the skin. When we do more than one treatment at the same visit (R0), the break is also longer for the same reason.

With careful and professional care, we ensure a neat and desirable end result.

I have a new tattoo. When can I start the removal?

Because the surface of the skin is damaged when the tattoo is made, you should wait 2 months before we can start the removal with the laser. The surface of the skin should be fully healed and strengthened in order to withstand the laser treatment. During this time, you can make an appointment for a consultation so that we can plan and discuss the treatment to be started in advance.

Does the treatment hurt?

Laser tattoo removal is a very painless treatment. Mild pain is often described as the snap of a rubber band against the skin. The location of the tattoo also makes a difference, as areas with less fat and muscle, such as the knees, hands, feet and face, are more sensitive. The pain may feel stronger if you have not slept well, are stressed or hungry.

However, you don't have to worry about pain, as most customers find that the treatment goes very painlessly thanks to the anesthetic cream. Many are more worried before treatment, but there is no reason for that. Our staff will support you in every step of the treatment. So far, we have never had to stop treatments because of pain.
